The One of a Kind Richard Lee Interview

I've heard so much great press about the unique sounds of Richard Lee, I grabbed my pen and headed into Terra Blues (where I found out he works when he's taking a break from playing with all the famous players of the world) and humbly asked for a few minutes of his time...(above are recent pics of his band, "Stop Irrational Logic."

Phillster: So you're the hottest trumpet and flugel horn player around I hear?Richard:I'm a member of the band Stop Irrational Logic and I also manage here (Terra Blues in the Village). I play every night...
Phillster: Really? What kind of music?
Richard: My band is a combination of blues, funk...I love to party, Dead Shows...my goal is to reach the young that like to be free, I made my music for them.
Phillster: What well known musicians inspire/inspired you?
Richard: Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, The Grateful Dead, Fish, Massive Attack...
Phillster: When did you learn how to play?
Richard: I was about eleven, I had no talent as a kid, it was an escape for me. I was a working musician at fourteen.
Phillster: Really?
Richard: I had a lot of obstacles to overcome as a musician.
Phillster: What do you mean by obstacles?
Richard: Well, I was tone deaf, which makes it that much harder to learn music. I drilled the A note into my head by picking up the phone (especially pay phones, their dial tones were really loud back then), that's how I taught myself that note.
Phillster: That's some determination to learn!
Richard: I believe anyone can do anything if they have the desire to do it. I'm just a Brooklyn kid who ended up writing notes for Mick Jagger...wrote the horn lines for his song, "Sweet Thing" on the "Wondering Spirit" album...I played with Squeeze, Steely Dan, Rick Derringer, The Blues Travelers, Joan Osborne, Tom Jones, it's a very big list.
Phillster: Who was the most memorable? I
Richard: was the most nervous playing with McCoy Tyner, he played with Charlie Parker.
Phillster: What was Mick Jagger like?
Richard: We never met, just went there and recorded for him...
Phillster: What's it like being a manager at the most famous Jazz club in the city? Richard: Amazing, as the manager, I do everything; run the club, hire, lights, sound, security, money, play some tunes...we get the best talent here.
Phillster: Ever manage clubs before? (hesitating) Richard: All the topless places; New York Dolls, Private Eyes, Flash Dancers (first topless club in New York City), before that I was a Pentecostal Minister...
Phillster: You're kidding, right?
(laughing) Richard: Nope, that's where I played, got my roots: Pucho, Latin Souls Brothers (now in the Latin Hall of Fame).
Phillster: Recent musical gigs?
Richard: Just did the Lake George Jazz Fest last week.
[Leaves momentarily to play on stage with the band. While he plays I'm in awe. I've never heard anything like that before, it's so unique...I can't believe how easily he just switches from manager to musician persona, how the audience just froze, (stopped talking and just listened); letting their minds, bodies and souls be taken over by the legendary sounds of the Micheal Powers Band and Micheal Lee's instruments]
Phillster: That was great, you are a great collaborator!
Richard: Thank you, I give people I work with the foundation to create something together, a lot of great musicians can't do this...
Phillster: Do you believe New York's where it's at? (Pondering) Richard: Well, yes and no...wow, I'm a little jaded about New York, "to be or not to be?" it's good to be here, it's the only place there are no borders...
Phillster: You're jaded?
Richard: After 911..when Bush came into office, I changed my band's name from Irrational Logic to Stop Irrational Logic...I might change it when he leaves.
Phillster: If you could work with anyone? (laughing) Richard: Charlie Parker, he's dead but if I coud play a gig-he plays sax...Charlie Parker was the first one to take the structure out of music and open jazz up to feeling and interpretation.
Phillster: What makes you do what you do? (very seriously) Richard: Life..watching people die (several of his families members succumbed to cancer in his youth), being the fat kid people made fun of...some people get angry of their difficult past, it helped me become a better person. I feel attached to the universe when I play, I want to forget time, space...we are all connected.
Phillster: Was music always your first goal? Richard: Pretty much. In college, I was into numbers, math, science...if you can create the right interval, if you can tap into the right vibration, you can create perfection...
Phillster: I'm ready to learn an instrument right now, I'm very inspired with all this talk of music, playing music and being free, what a great way to live.
Richard: It is! (smiling and walking away to greet guests at the door at Terra Blues)
Come listen to this great jazz player and check out his web site for dates, shows, and other amazing info!
Richard's Bio:
Richard Lee's new musical style "Vibe" is a fusion of this seasoned musical performer's experience playing the full range of musical language including classical, funk, rap, heavy metal, rhythm and blues, trance and gospel. From his tours in the states, including
recent appearance at the Bingham Jazz Fest with Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, to international tours in Mexico, Canada, Greece, Spain, the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden,Finland Germany and Jamaica Richard's musical style is immediately recognized by performers for its individual sound and his ability to give the jazz trumpet, an instrument not usually adapted to different styles, a new voice.
A professional trumpet player since he was 14-years old, when he would cut high school classes to go to college music classes with his older friends, Richard's musical career was shaped and reflects his early indoctrination by a friend at a young age to gospel music. By his early 20's he was playing with guitarist, Ed Cherry, drummer, Igancio Berroa and bass player, Marcus McGlaughin.
Disography
Horn lines for Mick Jagger's "Sweet Thing", Grant Green Jr.'s "Introducing G.G.", Pucho and The Latin Soul-Brothers " The Hideout " Milo Z " Live and Bumpin and Sweet and Nasty " and Scott Brown's "Flavors."
A short list of venues have included an appearance with Stanley Jordon and Buddy Miles at the Blue Note, shows at Sweet Basil's with The McCoy Tyner Trio, The Cotten Club, Elbow Room, New Music Café, Mondo Perso, and Mondo Cane. Led his 10-piece orchestra at The Bitter End, His band " Irrational Logic" was the guest house band on, CNNBC's Amcerica's Talking with Bill McCuddy and America After Dark, the Pat Sayjak show, and the Jerry Lewis Telethone.
While formal training has given Richard the tools to execute his music, it's the experience of playing with seasoned performers all over the world, the sounds, voices and feeling of locations he has lived in and listened to, that he has fused to create his "Vibe."
Music is Richard's life and his life is his music.
S. Sperber
When you listen to Stop Irrational Logic, be prepared to take a trip. The music is packed with so much power and emotion that you are put into a trance, taken to another level. It really makes you feel the positive energy. That is what front man and composer, Richard Lee, strives for. He wants the music to be thought-provoking as well as entertaining.
He's played with, Rick Derringer, Donald Fagen, Blues Travelers, Taylor Dayne, McCoy Tyner Trio,
Stanley Jordan, Merle Saunders, Buddy Miles, Spin Doctors, DJ Logic, Del Shannon and Tom Jones .
Richard has recorded with Mick Jagger "Sweet Thing", GreenHouse 27 "Greenhouse 27", Cycomotogoat "Braille", Kenji Hino "Thinking 'Bout You", Antilife "Antilife", Milo Z "Live n Bumpin" and "Sweet and Nasty", Michael Powers and Richard Lee "Spirits", Grant Green Jr. "Introducing G.G.", Pucho and the Latin soul-Brothers "The Hideout" and Scott Brown "Flavors". The list goes on and on.
Richard has toured many times through Europe as well as the United States playing to packed houses and standing ovations.
The experiences in his life have created the music which flows through his horn and the songs that he writes. Richard is influenced by a diverse group: Chuck Mangione, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown and groups like Phish, The Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd and Massive Attack. Stop Irrational Logic is not just the name of the band but his message to the world . This album is a mix of live as well as studio recordings. Enjoy the ride.
S.
A letter from Rochelle Gordon

Dear Richard,

I was reading an interesting article about a book two female advertising executives wrote about their unique attitude. Their philosophy was that it pays to be nice. In other words, they didn't go in for the dog-eat-dog mentality, or the idea that you had to be out to "get" your competition. And, lo and behold, they succeeded and became one of the nation's fastest-growing advertising agencies.

They said, "Actually, it takes courage to be nice. It takes bravery to help your enemy or give kudos to your competitor. It takes great inner strength to show compassion for someone who isn't treating you particularly well." And they cite research that has shown that taking the nice path can strengthen not only your career, but also marriage and even health. Well, Richard, I'm actually not surprised at that.

What it really boils down to is that old saying about "what goes around comes around." And that is just a description of what you might call the Law of the Universe. What we "put out there" comes back to us. So, if we're expressing ourselves negatively in our thoughts or words or acting in a destructive way, the Universe is going to reflect that back to us. On the other hand, if we have a positive mindset and act for and look for the best in any situation, the Universe will echo back that to us in abundance.

So, Richard, I'd like to leave you with this simple thought: don't be afraid to be nice! It pays.

Robin Williams World View

Robin Williams, wearing a shirt that says "I love New York" in
Arabic.

You gotta love Robin Williams...... Even if he's nuts!

Leave it to Robin Williams to come up with the perfect plan. What we
need now is for our UN Ambassador to stand up and repeat this message.

Robin Williams' plan...(Hard to argue with this logic!)

"I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a
plan for peace. So, here's one plan."

1) "The US will apologize to the world for our "interference" in
their affairs, past &present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin,
Tojo, Noriega, Milosevic, Hussein, and the rest of those "good ole
boys", we will never "interfere" again.

2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with
Germany, South Korea, the Middle East, and the Philippines. They don't
want us there. We would station troops at our borders. No one allowed
sneaking through holes in the fence.

3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and
leave. We'll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder
will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of whom or
where they are. They're illegal!!! France will welcome them.

4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90
days unless given a special permit!!!! No one from a terrorist nation
will be allowed in. If you don't like it there, change it yourself and
don't hide here. Asylum would never be available to anyone. We don't
need any more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers.

5) No foreign "students" over age 21. The older ones are the bombers.
If they don't attend classes, they get a "D" and it's back home baby.

6) The US will make a strong effort to become self-sufficient energy
wise. This will include developing non polluting sources of energy, but
will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The
caribou will have to cope for a while.

7) Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel
for their oil. If they don't like it, we go someplace else. They can go
somewhere else to sell their production. (About a week of the wells
filling up the storage sites would be enough.)

8) If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we
will not "interfere." They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds,
rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides most of what we give them
is stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very
little, if anything.

9) Ship the UN Headquarters to an isolated island someplace. We don't
need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, the building
would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens.

10) All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no
one can call us "Ugly Americans" any longer. The Language we speak is
ENGLISH...learn it...or LEAVE...Now, isn't that a winner of a plan?

"The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying "Give me your tired, your
poor, your huddled masses." She's got a baseball bat and she's yelling,
'you want a piece of me?' "

Hi Richard,

Great show last night, totally off the hook, 2 drummers really blew my mind. Every time I see Guy I appreaciate him more and more, he has hang and timing paterns that are very different, he also uses the cymbals as an instrument not just as "punctuation", he really is a extreamly funky drummer! 2 Guitars... The rest of the band super as always, Tanya is a mind blower, she lets it just flow in all styles, on hitters and ballards. The new Bass player was super too.

I love the way you started the set with the Bass player just jammin to the turntable then one by one everybody walked on and joined in the jam. I have seen this before (Eddie Harris 1970's) many years ago and its still a sweet move.

Most importantantly you looked GREAT, and more importantantly I'm happy your healthy and going to me around for a long time! After my divorce, I want to loose weight and get healthy too so I won't feel & look so old at the gigs I go to.

I will unload the camera this weekend if I can and start looking for good images for you.

Also I ran into little Luca the guitar player from Blue Number Nine. He's leaving them and looking for more work as well as my friend Stefanie at Blue Number Nine is looking for a new replacement guitar player if you know of any. Her band is on the road all summer doing outdoor venues etc. I meet here when she opened for Average White Band here in Stamford at the outdoor Summer Series. She's great people!

As always... Keep on Funkin!
